Class Description

Libraries, archives and museums aren’t often thought of as being targets for cybersecurity risks. However, with the rise of ransomware attacks on cultural heritage institutions, we are seeing even the most prestigious institutions are not immune to data loss. In this session, we will identify common issues with cybersecurity for cultural heritage institutions, but also highlight instances where libraries or museums got it right -- when they were attacked, what they did right, and how your institution can learn from them in order to minimize downtime in the event of a cyberattack.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  1. Describe what ransomware for libraries, archives and museums often looks like
  2. Explain common mistakes cultural heritage institutions make when responding to ransomware attacks (following the principle "respond, do not react") with examples of what was done right
  3. Identify next steps after a ransomware attack, including what to expect and prepare for after.
