Class Description
Based on a poster presented at ALA 2024, Jain Orr will describe how in only four years she increased the number of murals in the high school library from zero to 19 (and counting). The best part is that student artists did 99% of the work. Jain will explain how "allowing" murals is different from "managing" murals. While both strategies have pros and cons, she argues for the efficiency and richness of allowing murals -- describing how library workers can create the conditions for murals to paint themselves. Library staff taking a back seat to the mural process means that students take the lead on project management: developing valuable lifelong skills, adding to their portfolio, and leaving a lasting impact on their school. Further, allowing murals creates a vibrant and visually diverse library aesthetic, the overall effect of which reflects the unique character of the population.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this class, students will be able to:
- describe the difference between allowing murals and managing murals.
- outline the pros and cons of each approach as it relates to staff workload.
- identify the physical and emotional materials necessary to allow murals.
