Class Description

If you have money, you can buy a makerspace. But if you’re creative, you can make one. This presentation will describe the experience of a high school librarian who made a makerspace (for free). The makerspace has since become a vital resource to the school community; providing free access to supplies for projects or tinkering, reducing grocery store trips made by teachers, and increasing library foot traffic (and relevance). The best part is that it is composed entirely of donations, demonstrating that limited access to money is not an obstacle to building an amazing makerspace. A sign above the craft area provides all the instructions one needs to use the space: "Give what you can, take what you need."

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • list free resources from existing institutional social networks.
  • describe best practices for day-to-day makerspace management.
  • develop a culture of supply sustainability so that heavy makerspace users are those most likely to replenish stock without direct intervention by library staff.

Instructor

Jain Orr spent 5 years as a high school librarian in Austin ISD and has a background in grassroots activism, community development and ethnographic research. Currently, she is a doctoral student at the University of Texas interested in the impact of school librarianship, particularly at the secondary level.
