Class Description

Confronted with the prospect of book bans that target LGBTQIA+ youth, Texas high school librarian Jain Orr recognized that there were plenty of service-oriented ways to support her gender-non-conforming students (the majority of whom may not identify as "readers"). In what turned out to be an elegant example of universal design, she found that when she developed services to support her queer student population, it helped many others in unexpected ways. In this presentation, she will describe the development of these services and the impact they had on not just LGBTQIA+ students, but also the entire campus and school district.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • describe primary pain points for gender-non-conforming students in relation to the library's role.
  • identify adjustments that can be made to language (both signage and speech).
  • articulate why these adjustments connect to broader accessibility as it relates to universal design principles.

Instructor

Jain Orr spent 5 years as a high school librarian in Austin ISD and has a background in grassroots activism, community development and ethnographic research. Currently, she is a doctoral student at the University of Texas interested in the impact of school librarianship, particularly at the secondary level.
