From Search Queries to Smart Prompts: A Librarian's Guide to Working with AI Tools

This webinar introduces librarians to the art and science of prompt engineering for AI tools, with a focus on large language models (LLMs). As AI becomes increasingly prevalent in library settings, understanding how to effectively communicate with these systems is crucial. Participants will learn why traditional search query techniques fall short when working with AI and how to craft prompts that yield more accurate, relevant, and useful results.

The session will cover best practices for constructing clear, context-rich prompts that maximize the potential of AI tools. Attendees will gain hands-on experience in prompt engineering, learn to critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, and explore emerging trends in AI relevant to library services. This webinar is designed to empower librarians with the skills needed to leverage AI technologies effectively in their professional practice, enhancing patron services, and streamlining workflows.

This webinar supports Lyrasis’ commitment to equipping information professionals with cutting-edge skills for the digital age. By fostering AI literacy among librarians, we aim to enhance the value and relevance of library services in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • Differentiate between simple search queries and comprehensive prompts, identifying why prompt engineering matters for getting meaningful AI results.
  • Construct effective prompts that elicit high-quality responses from large language models (LLMs), applying best practices for clarity and context.
  • Evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, relevance, and potential biases, ensuring they align with professional standards.
  • Explore emerging tools and trends in AI relevant to librarians, fostering ongoing professional development and innovation.

Instructor - Steve Eberhardt

Steve Eberhardt is the Project Coordinator of the Lyrasis-hosted Performing Arts Readiness project. Steve's M.A. in Sociology focused on Social Data Analysis. He has been studying and experimenting with generative AI-powered tools for three years and sought ways to use them more efficiently and increase productivity. Steve has coordinated collaborative grant-funded projects at Lyrasis for over 20 years, including a 2006-2008 Mellon Foundation-funded grant that assisted academic libraries in their recovery from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well as managed an NEH-funded project that provided training, grants, and consultations to preserve photographic and audiovisual collections at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
