As media and information landscapes change, so do the information-seeking behaviors of the next generation. It can be difficult to stay on top of the latest trends, much less incorporate these rapid shifts into our library instruction sessions and consultations. How do we meet students where they are and bridge the generational divide without being "cringe?" How do we make instruction both informative and engaging? How do we as librarians stay on trend without losing our authenticity? This webinar will provide librarians with experience from the field, provide practical ways to maintain relevance in instruction, and best practices for having engaging and meaningful interactions with students.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • Identify media, information seeking, and communication preferences of several generations
  • Explain where new media is being created and how to stay current with a rapidly evolving information landscape as a form of continuing education
  • Describe how to integrate recent and relevant media during library instruction to connect and build relationships

Instructors

Elizabeth Allen (she/her) is a Humanities and Social Science Librarian at Louisiana State University, where she is the liaison for the History, English, Political Science, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies departments. She also assists with library programming for the student body and is co-chair for the LSU Libraries Open House. She is a member of the RUSA History Section Academic Librarians Committee and the Incoming Convener for the ACRL History Librarians Interest Group. Outside of the office, she dances with a local parade dance krewe, the Baton Rouge BeignYAYs, and when she isn’t doing that, she is reading whatever romantasy book she can get her hands on. Most importantly, she breaks the librarian stereotype of being a cat owner and instead, owns a giant Irish Wolfhound.

Danielle Costello (she/her) is a Student Success Librarian at the University of Georgia, where she teaches library instruction and develops programming for the student body. She is the 2024-2025 President of the ALA Games & Gaming Roundtable and also serves on the event programming and outreach committees. Outside of work she moonlights as a cleric and occasionally as a capybara trying to maintain a healthy low-stress, high-mayhem lifestyle.

Nicollette Davis (she/her) is Assistant Librarian for Kinesiology, Social Work, and Health Sciences at Louisiana State University. She is based in Baton Rouge, LA.

Lauren Lay (she/her) is the research and instruction librarian for the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. She earned her Master of Library and Information Science in 2022 from the University of Oklahoma. In her free time, Lauren enjoys reading (fantasy, literary fiction, memoirs, romance), playing D&D, and Latin-style dancing (salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, etc.).
